SUPERGIRL CRASHES & BURNS AT BOX OFFICE—TOY STORY 5 KEEPS THE CROWN

Milly Alcock's DCU debut lands a disappointing $38M opening, while Pixar's sequel holds strong at $70M. Ouch.

The red cape couldn't save the day! Supergirl touched down with a rough $38 million opening weekend—well below what Warner Bros. was banking on for the Craig Gillespie-directed superhero flick, which reportedly cost $175 million to make. The Milly Alcock–led feature got muscled aside by Toy Story 5, which claimed the top spot with $70 million despite a hefty 56 percent drop from its previous weekend.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran isn't throwing in the towel just yet, though. According to Deadline, Safran remained "confident" in the DCU's overall game plan even after admitting Supergirl "didn't meet our box office expectations." Translation: the studio's betting there are more tricks up their cape sleeves down the road.

Not all box office news was a downer this weekend! A24's comedy The Invite, helmed by Olivia Wilde, stunned in limited release with the highest per-screen average of the entire weekend. The flick grossed $379K across just 7 screens in New York and LA, scoring a stellar $54K per-screen average and selling out theaters in both cities. Talk about making an entrance!

Meanwhile, Jackass: Best and Last also debuted in the frame, rounding out a crowded weekend that proved Toy Story's staying power is no joke.
