SKYWALKERS SCALE THE EMPIRE STATE—AND GET ENGAGED AT THE TOP!

Netflix's daredevil documentary duo Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau just pulled off the stunt of a lifetime—a secret climb to the tip-top of New York's most iconic tower.

Talk about a PROPOSAL with a view! Ivan "Vanya" Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, the fearless stars of Netflix's 2024 documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, made headlines on July 1 when they scaled nearly 1,500 feet to the very top of the Empire State Building's spire—cat face masks and all. Once they reached the peak, they got engaged and unfurled a peace banner, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

But here's the twist: Netflix says the climb wasn't part of the doc's plans—and it definitely wasn't sanctioned by authorities. The stunt triggered a massive police response and dominated news cycles across local and national outlets, sparking plenty of hot takes. CNN came down HARD on the couple, calling the move "performative" and "egregious," and warned they could face serious legal trouble.

The Skywalkers have built their whole brand around jaw-dropping rooftop stunts and extreme heights (the doc is literally about their death-defying adventures), so this engagement was very on-brand—just apparently not on Netflix's brand! The couple's bold move has everyone talking: Is it romance or recklessness? Probably a little of both.
