NETFLIX FLEXES IN FRANCE—BUT PLAYS NICE IN COLOMBIA

The streaming giant is taking heat from Paris over new funding rules while opening doors for young producers across Latin America.

Netflix is in the hot seat in France right now. According to Deadline and Variety, the streamer has fired back at newly expanded investment obligations in the territory, arguing that stricter spending rules risk turning cultural diversity into a mere "checklist" and could actually weaken the production ecosystem. Netflix France's VP of content Pauline Dauvin warned in an op-ed published in Le Monde that the new regulations threaten editorial freedom—and she's not alone. Prime Video has also lodged an appeal against the proposed obligations, with both platforms pushing for investment caps.

But while Netflix is taking a firm stance in Europe, it's spreading the love south of the border! Variety reports that Colombia's Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM) is getting a major boost thanks to a new Netflix alliance that's opening doors to young producers across Central America, the Caribbean, and the Andean region. This year's program welcomes 40 participants—a huge expansion from past years when only Colombian creators participated in the training and networking sessions. It's a totally different vibe: Netflix flexing creative muscle and nurturing the next generation of storytellers!

The contrast is telling. While the streamer battles bureaucracy in France over how much it *has* to spend, it's voluntarily investing in emerging talent hubs in Latin America. Looks like Netflix knows where the future of compelling content could be coming from!
