KOREAN CINEMA MERGER MELTS DOWN

South Korea's massive theater deal between Lotte Cinema and Megabox just collapsed after 14 months of tough negotiations.

So much for a power move! Lotte Cinema and Megabox, South Korea's second and third largest cinema chains, have officially called it quits on a blockbuster merger that would've created the country's biggest theatrical exhibitor. According to Variety and Deadline, the two chains terminated their merger agreement on June 30—ending negotiations that kicked off way back in May of last year.

What went wrong? The deal cratered under the weight of a major financial crisis at Megabox's parent company, JoongAng Group. Lotte Shopping and Contentree JoongAng both confirmed the split in corporate filings this week, with sources telling Deadline and Variety that money troubles made the whole thing unworkable.

For movie buffs in South Korea, this means the theatrical landscape stays the same—at least for now. The two chains will continue operating independently, and any plans for a supersized cinema empire have officially been shelved. In the fast-changing world of theatrical exhibition, sometimes even the biggest dreams don't make it past the pitch meeting!
