IRANIAN DRAMA 'HIJAMAT' HEADS TO KARLOVY VARY WITH A BOLD LOVE STORY
Director Nader Saeivar brings a Berlin-set tale of forbidden romance and family secrets to a major European film festival.
Iranian filmmaker Nader Saeivar is taking his latest creation on the festival circuit! According to Variety, his drama "Hijamat" is Berlin-bound — both as a setting and as a Karlovy Vary Film Festival selection — and it's packing serious emotional firepower.
The film centers on a man named Karam whose secret romantic relationship with another man becomes a bombshell for his deeply religious Muslim family. Talk about keeping it under wraps! Saeivar has been collaborating with acclaimed Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi since 2017, and this project marks another chapter in their creative partnership.
Saeivar told Variety that the story reflects real tensions playing out in Iran today, noting "there is a sort of aversion towards religion among the young generation" — a cultural undercurrent that makes Karam's struggle feel especially timely and raw. The Karlovy Vary Film Festival is about to get a dose of intimate, daring international cinema that cuts right to the heart of family, identity, and acceptance.
