BULGARIAN FILMMAKING DUO BACK WITH CORRUPTION THRILLER
Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov return to Karlovy Vary with a searing look at modern-day Bulgaria in 'Black Money for White Nights.'
The powerhouse directing team behind 2019's Oscar-race contender 'The Fathers' is back in competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, and they're diving deep into some seriously dark waters. Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov's new film, 'Black Money for White Nights,' takes aim at corruption and moral rot in contemporary Bulgaria, set against the backdrop of 2022, according to Variety.
The Bulgarian pair made major waves when 'The Fathers' snagged the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary and went on to represent Bulgaria in the foreign-language film Oscar race—so expectations are HIGH for this one. Their latest project sounds like it's tackling big themes: not just the everyday corruption plaguing modern Bulgaria, but also a nostalgia for the pro-Russia era that's shaping the country's current moral landscape.
Karlovy Vary is clearly a festival that loves what these two are cooking up, and fans of socially conscious cinema should definitely be keeping an eye on this one. When filmmakers start interrogating corruption AND cultural memory in the same project, you know it's going to be a conversation-starter.
