Does the film let Oppenheimer off the hook by making the bomb inevitable?Discussion starter

Nolan spends 3 hours showing us Oppenheimer's genius and moral anguish, but never seriously entertains that he could've walked away. Is that a profound portrait of complicity, or does the film's structure excuse him?
